Arranging Rectangles

چکیده

Grids have been described in the design literature for at least 50 years. French architect Le Corbusier describes a grid system in his 1946 book Le Modulor [2]. Swiss graphic designer Karl Gerstner describes a number of grid systems or “programmes” in his 1964 book Designing Programmes [1]. One of Gerstner’s examples is a 15th century system for varying cathedral windows. Use of tatami mats appears to go back 1300 years. Writing systems (both alphabetic and ideographic) are even older examples. The classic work on grids is Josef Muller-Brockman’s 1981 Grid Systems [3], which documents grid systems in his own work and that of other Swiss designers of the “modern” period. Recently, grids have again become a popular subject of design discussions, especially as a new generation of designers tackles the challenges of designing for the web. Cascaded treemaps: examining the visibility and stability of structure in treemaps

Treemaps are an important and commonly-used approach to hierarchy visualization, but an important limitation of treemaps is the difficulty of discerning the structure of a hierarchy. This paper presents cascaded treemaps, a new approach to treemap presentation that is based in cascaded rectangles instead of the traditional nested rectangles. Cascading uses less space to present the same contain...

A THEORETICALLY CORRECT RESOURCE USAGE VISUALIZATION FOR THE RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM

The cumulative resource constraints of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) do not treat the resource demands as geometric rectangles, that is, activities are not necessarily assigned to the same resource units over their processing times. In spite of this fact, most papers on resource-constrained project scheduling mainly in the motivation phase use a strip packing of re...

A Fast Algorithm for Covering Rectangular Orthogonal Polygons with a Minimum Number of r-Stars

Introduction This paper presents an algorithm for covering orthogonal polygons with minimal number of guards. This idea examines the minimum number of guards for orthogonal simple polygons (without holes) for all scenarios and can also find a rectangular area for each guards. We consider the problem of covering orthogonal polygons with a minimum number of r-stars. In each orthogonal polygon P,...

Interactive Self-Organizing Windows

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a dynamic window management technique that changes the perception of windows as fixed-sized rectangles. The primary goal of self-organizing windows is to automatically display the most relevant information for a user’s current activity, which removes the burden of organizing and arranging windows from the user. We analyze the image-base...

An Evolutionary Approach to Support Web Page Design

Arranging pictures or photographs on a wall or a sheet of paper can be viewed as a layout problem that consists in placing a set of rectangles on a large rectangle so that there are no overlaps, and all edges are parallel to either the vertical or horizontal edge of the large rectangle. Automating this process is sensible in connection with web page design, in particular if frequent changes occ...
